Part of the Chinese SAIC Motor group, the MG ZS EV electric SUV began its sales in France in 2020. Since late 2021, it has been offered in a fully restyled version.
At its launch, the MG ZS was equipped with a 105 kW motor (equivalent to 143 horsepower) and 353 Nm of torque. Since its restyling, the vehicle is available in two motor variants: 115 kW and 130 kW. In both cases, the top speed is limited to 175 km/h, and it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds.
Additionally, the MG ZS was initially equipped with a single 44.5 kWh capacity pack. In its restyled version, the MG electric SUV now offers two capacities:
- 72 kWh, paired with the 115 kW motor, can travel up to 440 km on a full charge.
- 51 kWh, paired with the 130 kW motor, offers 320 km of range. Note that this version will only be available from 2022.
The MG ZS Battery
The MG ZS EV benefits from advanced battery technology with impressive levels of safety and durability. Indeed, MG’s parent company, SAIC Motor, is one of the most experienced EV manufacturers in the world and has partnered with China’s largest lithium-ion battery manufacturer, CATL.
SAIC Motor works closely with CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited), the largest lithium-ion battery manufacturer in China and one of the top five globally. SAIC Motor and CATL have formed a joint venture since 2017.
Thanks to SAIC Motor’s extensive research and development in battery technology and its collaboration with CATL, MG boasts one of the best battery technologies on the market. A key feature is excellent temperature management. A lithium-ion battery performs best at around 20 degrees Celsius. In addition to optimal range, good battery temperature management also ensures durability.
MG ZS Range
The range is about 263 km with a fully charged battery. However, the actual range depends on several factors, including climate, road conditions, use of air conditioning, and driving style.
Charging is done using a type 2 connector, and the onboard charger has a maximum power of 6.6 kW. This allows a completely discharged battery to be fully charged in about 8 hours. Charging the car using a domestic wall socket takes about 22 hours and 45 minutes.
Factors Affecting Range
Many factors influence the range of an MG ZS EV, as with any electric car.
- Weather conditions: Extreme temperatures (very high or very low) can accelerate battery degradation and thus reduce the range of your MG ZS. We advise not driving more than 5 days a year in temperatures above 27°C.
- Fast charging: Frequent use of fast charging accelerates the battery degradation of your MG ZS. We recommend limiting the use of fast charging to preserve your battery’s health and your electric car’s range.
- Usage conditions: The type of journey, road elevation, driving style, and highway use all affect the range of your MG ZS. We recommend adopting a smooth driving style, avoiding hard accelerations and sudden braking. Use engine braking and moderate your speed on highways to optimize your vehicle’s range.
- Storage conditions: It is important not to charge or park your MG ZS in extreme temperatures, either too low or too high. This can damage your battery and make it difficult to recharge your vehicle. We advise not leaving your electric car unused for too long. If this happens, ensure the charge level is neither too high nor too low. Also, park your MG ZS indoors at room temperature.
Testing Your MG ZS Battery
All the factors mentioned contribute to the aging of your MG ZS battery. Therefore, it is essential to test your battery to know its health status, especially if you want to resell your vehicle on the used market.
Although the MG ZS benefits from a 7-year or 150,000 km warranty that also covers the battery and is transferable, it is important to reassure potential buyers about the actual health status of your battery.
To do this, you can call upon a trusted third party like Moba. We offer a reliable and independent battery certificate for only €49. This solution is very simple and quick. You can perform the battery diagnostic from home in just 5 minutes using the Moba app and the device provided in our kit.
A few days later, you will receive your battery certificate, which includes the following information:
– SOH (State of Health): This is the health status of your battery expressed as a percentage (e.g., 100% for a new electric car).
– Theoretical ranges: This is an estimate of your vehicle’s remaining range, taking into account battery wear, outside temperature, and type of journey (urban, highway, mixed).
– Moba score: This evaluates the overall health status of the vehicle considering the SOH, remaining buffer capacity, and maximum full charge range.
Currently, our battery certificate is only compatible with the earlier version of the MG ZS, i.e., MG ZS models before 2021. Stay tuned for updates on the certificate’s availability for the new generation MG ZS.
